Most people—even most musicians—simply do not understand how important music producers are to the artist's work; but producers really are essential. A really good music producer not only guides the artist through the process of making a record, but also helps to unlock exciting new possibilities for the artist in a way that carries on long after the producer's work is done. That's what Kahan James did for me.

Working with Kahan was a unique process I hope more people get to experience. Besides being an extremely knowledgeable engineer, Kahan understands the complexities of emotion and sound and how they work together to create powerful narratives. He brought my vocals to life, something I didn't expect out of a standard recording session. His understanding of the technical aspects of sound and how to capture certain qualities within recording is one of his unique abilities I haven't experienced with other producers and engineers. By the time we finished our sessions I felt like I understood so much more about my own music and the meaning behind it. A rare gem in the music industry. I would highly recommend Kahan!

I made the best record I’ve ever made, because of Kahan. He listened to my songs, to my feelings, and to my stories with great detail. He helped guide me to my own answers.
We’ve done multiple records with Kahan and have worked in every capacity together—from development through tracking and mixing, and from opposite sides of the Atlantic as well as coming over from London to record with him in New York. Kahan is honest and cares deeply about the music he works on. He’s versatile, attentive to detail, and mind-blowingly creative. His supplementary soundscapes and arrangements for strings and choir have played a hugely important role in the evolution of our songs. An incredibly knowledgeable and hard-working music producer, Kahan will open up doors you didn’t know were there.

Kahan James is a goddamn magician with an incredible arsenal of gear and instruments, and words can’t express the depth of creativity and devotion he brings to his projects. He’s an excellent communicator and an enviable talent, and I can’t wait to work with him again.

Kahan's well of musical knowledge is deep. He has a preternatural grasp on the elements necessary to build and refine any style of song. Writing, production, mixing, performance—he has both the technical and emotional ends covered. In the studio he's calm, objective, and enthusiastic. Opinionated and communicative without being pushy. He's very tall and symmetrical. He can also be a right goofball, which is an indispensable quality in any professional.
Not Blood Paint

Kahan’s ear is impeccable, his timing is flawless. His vision is vast, yet simple—his approach comprehensive, yet concise. Kahan is generous with his time and skill. He spent countless hours patiently recording, selecting, mixing, experimenting. His professionalism, attention to detail, and diligence are rare in this time. He wants the music to sound as clean and professional as possible while maintaining authenticity. You can trust his work is for you. I can’t say I would have ever considered working in a studio if it weren’t for Kahan. His certainty and trust in my project brought my relationship to making music to a new level. It was a very positive experience to work with such an intelligent, sensitive, careful, and attentive person.

Working with Kahan has been paramount in my journey as an artist. Not only did we make amazing recordings, but I learned a lot about the process of what it takes to do so. His intuition is unrivaled and always tasteful—he is a real pro.

It has been a true blessing to get to work with Kahan. We were having a conversation about all of these new algorithmic mastering applications on the market. I was considering using one of them for this howardAmb recording named "Mountain School", I was not even aware that Kahan offered mastering services. His insight, interest and his process made it easy for me to hand over the record to him as soon as I could. Our group was very happy with the results and I was really taken back about how much Kahan cared about the work in general. Two thumbs up way up!!!

Working with Kahan was kind of a dream come true. I'd heard the work he'd done with a lot of other musicians, and I was always impressed. His approach in the studio was serious and determined, but not so much that we couldn't have fun and play with the songs until they found their particular sound. Kahan repeatedly checked for my input during the mixing process to make sure I was getting what I wanted. But just as often I'd ask him to follow his instincts, and he'd lead us somewhere cool and unexpected. He loves music and he knows what he's doing. He elevated what had been a homemade demo to a professional EP that I'm proud to share with the world. I thank him.
